A new poll released by the Public Polling Institute of California found that 50% of Californians support the legalization of recreational marijuana. Additionally, the poll found that 60% of likely voters support legalization, and 68% believe that the federal government should not interfere with states that have legalized medical or recreational marijuana.
A PPIC poll conducted in 2012 showed that only 45% of California voters supported marijuana legalization, demonstrating a strong shift in opinion among voters in the past year alone. Attempts to legalize marijuana with Proposition 19 in 2010 famously failed, leaving many wondering why one of the leaders in the medical marijuana community could not come together to support full legalization.
The new poll results are promising for marijuana advocates, especially given that a new legalization measure was just given the go-ahead to begin collecting signatures from supporters to appear on the November 2014 ballot.
