From noon until 5PM today, hundreds of marijuana activists are gathering together to protest the Obama Administration’s actions against medical marijuana in Northern California.
The protest will be held at Oakland City Hall, 1 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, Oakland, CA. It will begin at noon and will continue through President Obama’s arrival at Fox Theater at 4:30 PM.
Steph Sherer, Executive Director of Americans for Safe Access, explained in a press release that, “We’re here to let the president know that there’s a political, and not just a financial, cost to shutting down law-abiding dispensaries. Patients are demanding that the president take account for his administration’s harmful actions and address medical marijuana like the public health issue that it is.”
Protesters will demand an end to federal interference as well as the firing of Melinda Haag, Northern California’s US Attorney.
Recently, the DEA forced the closure of Oaksterdam, which was a fixture in the medical marijuana community. Just last week, US Attorney Melinda Haag filed a forfeiture lawsuit against the landlord of Harborside Health Center, which would effectively force the closure of what is regarded to be the largest medical marijuana dispensary in the state.
President Obama is in town to raise funds for his Presidential re-election campaign.
