6,000 Pounds of Marijuana Found off California Coast

 by lucy

On Sunday, crew members of the US Coast Guard’s Cutter Alert discovered a suspicious vessel off the coast of Southern California after being alerted by a Coast Guard aircraft.

As the Coast Guard ship approached the suspicious boat, people on board began throwing packages overboard very quickly.  In all, crew members discovered 245 bales of marijuana weighing in at over three tons.

According to Coast Guard officials, that area off the coast of Southern California, 90 miles West of San Nicolas Island, is part of a common route used by Mexican drug cartels.  The route is used not only to smuggle marijuana, but also to sneak illegal narcotics into California.
