On Wednesday, US Border Patrol officials announced that earlier this month they conducted what they believe to be the largest seizure of marijuana ever at an Arizona-Mexico border crossing. Agents confiscated over 7 tons of the drug at the Mariposa Cargo Facility in Arizona.
The January 15th seizure took place after a 26 year old man from Mexico driving a tractor trailer was singled out at the check point. Inside the trailer, officials found 600 bundles of marijuana weighing 14,151 pounds.
Authorities are estimating that the marijuana is worth as much as $12 million.
The driver was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the marijuana was seized.
The largest drug seizure before this one occurred at the same point of entry in 2010. During that seizure, police confiscated 6 tons of marijuana.
