At a town hall event in Arizona on Thursday, Senator John McCain showed a shift in his feelings toward marijuana and legalization.
The Senator reportedly said, “Maybe we should legalize. We’re certainly moving that way as far as marijuana is concerned. I respect the will of the people.”
Recently, a number of public figures and politicians have changed their stance on legalization, including Dr. Sanjay Gupta. As more and more public figures show support for legalization, the more credibility it gains and the less taboo it comes for a politician to support it.
McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain, came out in favor of marijuana legalization in 2012, admitting that she had smoked a joint before.
During the town hall meeting, McCain also faced questions about the current situation with Syria, with many in opposition to military action. Some speculate that McCain’s change in marijuana stance comes at a time where the government is looking for some sort of favorable response from voters, as many of the recent actions, especially with Syria, have proven to be unfavorable with the majority of Americans.
