US Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske has addressed three petitions related to the legalization and rescheduling of marijuana which garnered over 173,000 signatures on petitions.whitehouse.gov. The White House allows anyone to submit a petition on the site, and will address the petition if it receives over 25,000 signatures within 30 days.
Kerlikowske did not do much to address the petitions, but did acknowledge that the United States is “in the midst of a serious national conversation about marijuana.”
He did reveal that, at President Obama’s request, the DOJ is reviewing the marijuana legalization initiatives in Washington and Colorado. But that was all the information the Drug Czar shared.
“In the meantime” he recommended that people refer to a recent interview that President Obama did with Barbara Walters, which came out weeks ago and provides no new information to voters.
In 2009, Kerlikowske called drug legalization “waving the white flag” and said that “legalization is off the charts when it comes to discussion, from my viewpoint.”
