420 is a term that has come to be synonymous with the cannabis movement and subculture. High Times reported that the phrase originated with a group of high school students, known as the Waldos, who would meet to search for an abandoned cannabis crop that they had heard about at 4:20 p.m.
After several meetings, 420 became the term they used to describe smoking marijuana in general. 4:20 p.m. has developed into a ritual time for many cannabis smokers, where they enjoy and show appreciation for their medicine.
April 20th (4/20) has also evolved into a cannabis-culture holiday, where people throughout the world come together to smoke marijuana. Some also gather on 4/20 to protest for marijuana legalization, decriminalization, or the acceptance of medical marijuana. Some communities allow for the public smoking of marijuana during peaceful 4/20 celebrations.
