For the past eight years, Tommy Chong has been battling stage 1 prostate cancer. The 74 year old former-actor, known for his ’70s stoner films with partner Cheech Marin, revealed to CNN that he has been using hemp oil to treat the illness.
He is now speaking out about his cancer and treatment in order to raise awareness about the importance of medical marijuana and marijuana decriminalization.
Chong explained, “I’ve got prostate cancer, and I’m treating it with hemp oil, with cannabis. So [legalizing marijuana] means a lot more to me than just being able to smoke a joint without being arrested.”
He does not smoke marijuana anymore, but instead ingests cannabis oil at night to ease his symptoms. Some have asserted that Chong’s heavy marijuana use could have led to his cancer, but Chong started having prostate problems after being drug free for three years. He said, “I know that it had nothing to do with cannabis. Cannabis is a cure.”
Approximately 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime, making it one of the most common cancers to affect men. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men after lung cancer. About 1 in 36 men in America will die form prostate cancer. Studies have shown that medical marijuana can help in decreasing the spread of cancer cells in those with prostate cancer.
