On Tuesday, the Dalai Lama told marijuana activists that he supports the use of legal medical marijuana when it is shown to have helped the patient. The spiritual leader’s comments came in the middle of a debate put together by former president Vincente Fox as Mexico City considers legalizing recreational marijuana.
At the event, the Dalai Lama explained that he does not approve of recreational marijuana. He said that the “exception” would be if it is being used for pharmaceutical reasons. “But otherwise,” he stated, “if it’s just an issue of somebody (using the drug to have) a crazy mind, that’s not good.”
During his visit, Mexico officials kept the Dalai Lama at arm’s length in order to maintain their current relationship building with China. China considers the Dalai Lama to be a dangerous separatist and has been known in the past to punish countries, including Mexico, who give the Buddhist leader an open welcome.
